Flying Eagle Cent 1856 - 1858
First designed in 1856, the Flying Eagle cent was made to show Congress how the new cent was to look. The design of this cent was in circulation for a very short time as the Indian Head penny replaced it in 1859, making the Flying Eagle a very rare sight for the average person. On the front of this penny is an Eagle with wings spread in flight and the words “United States of America” arched over top.
